Mikes Journey Run

Michael's Story

The morning of April 5th, 2009 Michael was found in the family front room recliner by his Mom, non responsive but breathing after not feeling well for 2 weeks. He was taken by ambulance to Marshalltown Hospital. Most of his organs had shut down, and his heart was beating at an accelerated rate. The heart was beating so fast it was not pumping his blood efficiently so not enough oxygen was getting to Mike's brain. Michael was suffering with Staphylococcus Aureus Septic Shock an infection that invaded his body because his immune system had been depleted fighting another infection. Because Michael did not have enough oxygen getting to his brain cells he has an Anoxic Brain Injury.

Michael was transferred to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames on April 5th as soon as he was stable enough to travel by ambulance and the roads were cleared from a major winter storm. After 4 weeks of Acute Care in the Intensive Care Unit to keep him alive and then stable at Mary Greeley Hospital Mike was transferred to On With Life for the rehabilitation of his brain injury May 4th, 2009 .
